ORAC Value: What Is It?

Many products in the Hyllers series boast exceptionally high ORAC values. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. But what does this term actually mean?

Measuring Antioxidant Content
The ORAC value indicates the amount of antioxidants present in a product. The higher the value, the more antioxidants the product contains, making it healthier. Antioxidants serve to protect the body from harmful external influences known as free radicals.

What Are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are invasive substances that damage the functionality of healthy cells, causing harm that leads to diseases and aging. Fortunately, there is a solution! Antioxidants can counteract these substances, limiting damage, and repairing affected cells.

Vibrant Colors Signify High ORAC Values

Foods with vivid colors (containing pigments), such as beets, tomatoes, strawberries, red currants, and black currants, are especially rich in antioxidants. The previously mentioned superfoods are excellent examples, with beetroot powder, in particular, standing out due to its bright red color.

The previously mentioned superfoods are excellent examples! But the best example is, of course, beetroot powder with its bright red color.

Measuring Antioxidants Through ORAC Testing

ORAC testing measures the content of antioxidants in a product, specifically its capability to absorb free radicals. The stronger the absorption capability, the higher the ORAC value.

To conduct ORAC testing, place the product (such as beetroot powder), free radical-generating molecules, and oxidation-sensitive molecules in a test tube. After a period, measure the degree of protection the product provides to oxidation-sensitive molecules. The smaller the damage, the higher the ORAC value.
